Walnut tripod base table lamp. Inspired by mid-century design. Found shade

Sunday, September 23, 2012

This is a set of 3 upright room divider panels I made as part of a collaboration with the artist Linda Oliver. They are made primarily of Black Walnut with Bubinga and Wenge accents. The oil paintings are 24" x 48" featuring white roses. The screens themselves are just over 5 ft. tall x 30" wide each. They are currently available for sale!

Here are a few images of the pieces I made for the Minneapolis furniture show: Guerrilla by Design, which I participated in August 10-12, 2012.

For it having been the first annual event for the Guerrilla by Design I'd say it was a huge success. The turnout was exceptional. The atmosphere was alive! And it's safe to say we definitely made a statement for Midwest furniture design. The one downside is despite people being super excited about seeing the latest in local art, it seems they didn't come prepared to buy. So it goes...

This sideboard is made entirely of solid Ash with a custom water based stain. The door panels are solid, applied steel plates and the pulls are reclaimed cast iron. The construction was accomplished using tapered sliding dovetails. 58"x32"x18"
This bench has an oak base with a black lacquer finish, and a fiberglassed top with a white satin lacquer finish. What you can't see in the picture is the small sliding panel which conceals a small storage space flush mounted into the top. 68"x17"(H)x18"(D)
This stool is also made entirely of Ash but has a two tone stain highlighting the interior structure. It was assembled with floating tennons and has a leather covered swivel seat.

This is another scale model I made recently as a proposal for a piece to be made for a friend. They presented to me a fairly simple concept - a contemporary take on a midcentury classic - which I touched up with just a little bit of my own flavor and spec measurements. Check back soon for updates on the full scale piece.
This is a scale model I made to represent an armoire I designed as part of a design challenge. I'm happy with some of the subtle details in this piece such as the narrow reveal lines in the door panels and the overhanging top that separate it from something you'd find in a stock catalogue. A nice feature of this piece is that it is somewhat modular in that it could be produced in a system of different heights and and widths to meet different needs and the interior can be outfitted with a variety of hanging and storage options.

A planter box I made for our plastic containers where we plant our herbs and vegetables. Made with cedar, it has legs so it can be easily moved around and won't harm grass. Measured about 7ft. x 16in. x 18in. tall.

These are just process photos of a project I'm working on for some friends. It is a simple 6 drawer storage box which will mount underneath their bed. The entire structure and drawers are made of oak hardwood. The drawer were constructed using a router jig which cuts half blind dovetails into the corners. The pulls for the drawers are slots which were cut right into the drawer face.
